Nikon F-401s FAQ

  • The F-401s is part of Nikon's early consumer autofocus era, when SLRs were learning the shape they would keep for decades: built-in grip, integrated flash and body-driven AF.

  • The quirky part is its control layout. Nikon was experimenting with thumbwheels and electronic control, so it feels very different from an older FE or FM even though it still uses the Nikon F mount.

  • It suits shooters who want Nikon lens compatibility and autofocus convenience in a camera with real late-1980s personality.

  • It uses Nikon F-mount lenses, but compatibility depends on lens generation. Autofocus AF and AF-D lenses are the natural match; very old non-AI lenses should be avoided.

  • It is best for photographers who want Nikon film color, autofocus convenience and a body that feels more modern than a fully manual SLR.
