Canon AE-1 FAQ

  • The AE-1 was one of the first SLRs to use a digital integrated circuit for exposure control, helping Canon simplify the body and sell SLR photography to millions of amateurs.

  • AE stands for automatic exposure. On the AE-1, that mainly means shutter-priority automation: you choose the shutter speed and the camera chooses the aperture with compatible FD lenses.

  • It is classic, approachable and very 1970s Canon. The AE-1 feels like the camera that convinced compact-camera users they could handle an SLR.

  • Buy it if you want the iconic Canon FD experience and like the idea of shutter-priority shooting for motion, street and everyday photos.

  • It needs a battery to operate, and many examples benefit from service for age-related issues like shutter squeal. A tested body is worth it.
