Contax G1 FAQ

  • The G1 is technically an autofocus rangefinder-style system camera rather than an SLR. It uses titanium cladding, electronic autofocus and exceptional Carl Zeiss G lenses.

  • It looks like a classic rangefinder, but it focuses through an electronic AF system and uses a motor in the body to drive the lenses. That makes it feel futuristic and old-school at the same time.

  • The Contax G lenses, especially the 28mm Biogon, 45mm Planar and 90mm Sonnar, are a huge part of the system's reputation. Many photographers buy the body to get access to that glass.

  • Choose it if you want Zeiss rendering and compact interchangeable lenses, but prefer autofocus over a fully manual Leica-style workflow.

  • Some G1 bodies were updated to support later lenses such as the 21mm and 35mm; those are often called green-label G1s. Lens compatibility is worth checking if you plan to expand the kit.
